Decoding VA Math: A Complete Guide to Disability Ratings & Benefits

1. The Basics of VA Ratings

A VA disability rating measures how much a service-connected condition affects your daily life, ranging from 0% to 100% in 10% increments.

The VA uses the VASRD (VA Schedule for Rating Disabilities) to assign these percentages based on symptom severity. Mild symptoms yield lower ratings (0-10%), while severe symptoms yield higher ratings (70-100%). Each condition is rated individually, and then combined for your final overall rating.

2. Service-Connected vs. Non-Service-Connected

Before the VA assigns a percentage or applies any math, a condition must be officially recognized as Service-Connected. If the VA determines a condition is Non-Service-Connected, it is excluded from your combined rating for compensation purposes.

Service-Connected

Conditions caused by, aggravated by, or appearing during your military service. These are assigned a percentage (0% to 100%) and directly contribute to your overall combined rating and monthly compensation.

Non-Service-Connected

Conditions developed before or after service without a clear link to your military time. The VA will not compensate you for these, though you may still receive treatment for them at VA facilities depending on your priority group.

3. The Infamous "VA Math"

Contrary to simple addition, the VA uses a "combined rating" system based on a "Whole Person Theory". If you have a 50% rating and a 30% rating, they don't simply add up to 80%. Here's how it actually works:

4. Key Benefit Thresholds

0%

Service-connected but not compensable. This confirms a condition is related to service and grants access to specific VA healthcare.

10% - 20%

Monthly payment begins. You gain access to some outpatient treatments and service-connected medications.

30% - 40%

Increased compensation. Major milestone: You can now add eligible dependents (spouse, children) for additional monthly pay.

50% - 60%

Higher monthly payments. You are placed in Priority Group 1, granting cost-free VA medical care and prescriptions for all conditions.

70% - 90%

Substantial monthly pay. Opens the possibility of TDIU (Individual Unemployability) paying at the 100% rate if you cannot maintain employment.

Max Tier
100% P&T

The highest level. Unlocks extensive benefits like ChampVA dependent healthcare, Chapter 35 education assistance, and state-level property tax exemptions.

5. Additional Modifiers

Dependent Scaling

If your rating is 30% or higher, adding a spouse, minor children, school-age children (18-23), or dependent parents increases your monthly award significantly.

Bilateral Factor

Recognizes disabilities affecting paired body parts (e.g., both knees or both hands). The VA combines these first and adds a 10% "boost" before calculating your final rating.

Special Comp (SMC)

SMC offers extra tax-free pay for severe situations like loss of a limb, blindness, or needing Aid & Attendance. It is paid on top of standard percentage-based compensation.
