How VA Math Works
The Department of Veterans Affairs uses a "Whole Person Theory" to calculate combined disability ratings. They don't simply add the numbers together (e.g., 50% + 30% does not equal 80%).
The Calculation Steps
- 1Ratings are sorted from highest to lowest.
- 2You are assumed to start as 100% healthy.
- 3Each rating is applied only to the remaining healthy percentage of your body.
- 4The exact total is rounded to the nearest whole number at each step.
- 5The final combined rating is rounded to the nearest 10%.
Example: 50% & 30%
Highest Rating:50% disabled
Remaining Healthy:50%
Next Rating (30% of 50):+15% disabled
Exact Combined:65% disabled
Final Rounded Rating:70%
The Bilateral Factor
If you have qualifying disabilities affecting both arms, both legs, or paired skeletal muscles, the VA applies a bilateral factor. Checking the "Bilateral Consideration" box will combine your entered ratings and add an additional 10% factor before determining your final combined rating.
Disclaimer: This tool provides an estimate based on standard VA combined rating methodology. The VA makes the final determination on all disability claims and compensation amounts.
