Understanding Travel Days (JTR 050205)

Privately Owned Vehicle (POV)

For PCS travel by POV, authorized travel time is calculated using the official distance determined by the Defense Table of Official Distances (DTOD).

  • 350 miles is the standard daily driving distance.
  • If the remainder is 51 miles or more, one additional day is authorized.
  • If the total official distance is 400 miles or less, only 1 day is authorized.

Commercial Travel

When traveling by commercial transportation (plane, train, or bus), 1 day of travel time is typically authorized for travel within the Continental United States (CONUS).

Important Notes

  • Travel days are not leave; they are authorized duty days to complete your move.
  • If you take more days than authorized, the excess days are charged as leave.
  • If you complete the travel in fewer days than authorized, you are not charged leave for the unused days (but per diem is paid based on actual travel days).
Disclaimer: This is an estimate only. Please consult the JTR or your local finance office for official entitlements.
